Choosing your unique wedding ring

A wedding ring doesn't have to be a traditional band, although if that is what you want you can have that too !  It can be tailored to fit around an engagement ring, made in any metal with any texture, pattern or inscription on it (either by hand or using our state of the art CAD/CAM), it can have gemstones in it and be of any shape or size you desire.

Things to consider when choosing your wedding rings include:

DESIGN:   like any ring, a wedding ring will need to fit with your lifestyle and personality, as well as fitting your budget.  Like clothes , jewellery is a statement of your personal style. Would you like your wedding ring to be:

• Traditional - a simple band, perhaps flat or D shaped curved
• Modern - unusual, textured, patterned, stone set, asymmetrical, chunky, your own design, etc
• Designed - To fit around an existing engagement ring, or to be designed with the engagement ring, a matching pair or maybe a wedding engagement ring combine

Basically, if you can dream up an idea for a wedding ring, we can make the dream come true

If you'd like matching, his and hers wedding rings that is no problem. We'll work with you to find the right matching rings for both of you - it might be as easy as making you simple complimentary rings in matching metals, or it might be that you'd like something more unique and personal - perhaps engravings that are personal to you, or a texture or pattern you both like. Many couples like the symbolism of using stones in their wedding rings - diamonds are always popular, but if you feel you want a plain band, then its a nice idea to hide a stone on the inside of the ring - a secret that only you and your partner will know about. Whatever you liike, we can make matching wedding rings or commitment rings perfect for and original to you.

Are you looking for something different to the average wedding band? Many people are quite happy to go with a plain gold, or platinum band, and there is nothing wrong with that, but what if you want something more exciting or special? That is where Atelier comes in. We are used to making the usual and the unusual. Wedding bands can be made to fit around your engagement ring, rather than simply sitting beside it at an uncomfortable angle. If you prefer a "standard" shape wedding ring, then there are myriad selection of designs, patterns and textures that we can apply to your ring. Or if you prefer something more personal, then we can engrave a quote or motto of your choosing inside or outside your ring, a date, name or anything else you fancy - we've even engraved maps onto rings for couples to commemerate where they met !

Some people, for personal reasons, don't want a standard engagement ring. They prefer the wedding ring and engagement ring to be combined into one ring. These can be any design, and we can help with that using our wealth of experience in designing unusual wedding rings. Many have stones, not least of all diamonds, but any other stone you choose can be set into your wedding band (on the outside of the band, or inside if you prefer something more subtle. Whatever your heart desires, we can design for you and make by either hand fabrication or the use of CAD.

Eco Friendly Wedding Rings
If you are opting for an eco or green wedding, you can consider using either "green" ethical gold which we source from Oro Verde, or use re-cycled gold perhaps using old gold you may already have, either that you don't wear or you have been given by a relative - we can utilise gold you have that already has a sentimental meaning, and work it into your new ring.

Patterned weddding rings can take many and any form. We've made patterned rings with celtic knot work, Art Nouveau designs, Art Deco designs, patterns based on bird feathers, leaves, ley lines, even arial archeology. We can engrave any pattern you want, or any text you may want on your wedding ring (inside or out). We can also re-create textures that you might like on your wedding ring, even those which you think might be impossible. Want a ring that looks like it was made 800 years ago, buried in the ground and recently dug up ?  We can do it.  Or if you want wave textures, wood textures, rock, hammered, silk or fabric textures then we can do those too.  All we ask you to do is provide some idea of where to start and we'll do the rest.

We are often asked for wedding rings to fit round existing engagement rings or round shaped engagement rings we are designing. Using our computer aided design program, this task has become alot easier. Even if you haven't had your enagagement ring made by us, we can make wedding rings can easily be made to fit exactly round the most complicated engagement rings. You might think this sounds expensive, but it usually works out only a little bit more than buying a similar weight wedding ring from a high street shop. Hand Crafted Wedding Rings
Whilst we are often commissioned to make wedding rings which are best suited to CAD, we also regularly hand forge wedding bands. Designing your unique wedding ring

Many of our clients come to us when all else has failed - they've tried traditional jewellers, and even looked at jewellers who specialise in unique wedding and engagement ring design and drawn a blank.   Why?  Most jewellers still rely on hand drawn images to show you how your finished commission will look leaving a bridge between their drawing and your imagination.

Whilst we too can draw designs by hand, our state of the art CAD/CAM (computer aided design /manufacture) technology leaves nothing to your imagination - using our wedding ring design knowledge and expertise we can create, with ease, jewellery that many master goldsmiths would find challenging or impossible - and most importantly, before we've even sat down at the jewellers bench to start work you'll have seen beautiful photographic quality images of your piece which will only be bettered by the real thing.

Wedding ring case study No. 1 The Brief We were commissioned to produce a unique wedding ring by a lady who did not want a traditional ring, but she did want a gold band - a modern one - you might say she wanted a traditional wedding ring with a twist.  She didn't really have a budget, she just knew she wanted something different. The Design Following a few rough sketches, we moved to the computer and designed a chunky ring.  Then we remembered something she had said about liking an asymmetrical ring in the shop, and we did something you can only do with the computer and twisted the ring in two planes.  Fig. 1 below shows the initial result.

We consulted the Client to make sure we were on the right lines - she thought it was amazing!  A few days later we were contacted by her husband to be - as they did not have an engagement ring, he asked if we could turn this ring into an engagement wedding ring combined.  He wanted to buy her a diamond as a surprise.  We showed him some diamonds we had in stock and he settled on a 0.4ct white, VS (very slightly included) round brilliant white diamond.  We added this to the design and he was very happy with it.  Just to be sure, the surprise was sprung before we started to make the ring - she absolutely adored the new design with the diamond.

The Manufacture

We finalised our CAD design and made the ring casting in 18ct yellow gold. The ring was cleaned, set with the diamond and finished at our workshop. As soon as they could, the couple came over to see us to collect the ring, which was absolutley stunning - it cost £1950

Wedding ring case study No. 2 The Brief A couple were looking for a matching pair of unique wedding rings in silver and they couldn't find anything suitable in any jewellers so they came to us.  They wanted a ring that they could have engraved on the upper surface with a Japanese character which you can see in the picture of the rings left.  Their budget was around £500 for the pair of rings. The Design

The design for the ring itself was quite simple - it had to be something which would accomodate the engraving and that the clients liked.  The lady saw a ring in the shop that she was drawn to.  The gent wanted someting plain and chunky. 

We would have simply engraved the ring that the lady had seen with her special design, only the ring was far too small and was a one off - it was easier and cheaper to re-make it with the engraving using the CAD program when the gents ring was being designed.  So we created a pair of rings that you can see in figure 1 below.

The Manufacture

We finalised our CAD designs and made the rings casting in sterling silver. The rings were cleaned and finished at our workshop.  When the couple collected their rings, they were overjoyed with the result and the price as the pair of rings cost £455

	Unusual Wedding Rings An interesting pair of bespoke and totally unique, unusual wedding rings made for a barraster and his bride to be, a legal secretary, both keen Harley Davidson riders. His in silver, weighing in at 23g, has a "night rider" skull head with the words "Forever" embossed either side. Hers in platinum, weighing in at a solid 11g, has the words "IN OMNE TEMPUS" in an old font engraved on the outer ring. Both have the sentiment " Weresoever you go - go with all your heart" engraved on the inside if the rings

	Unusual wedding rings patterned with the client's own personal engravings inside and outside of the bands.  The ladies band had 3 diamonds flush set into the band.
	We were asked to design and mount several diamonds from three old rings belonging to the client into a wedding ring and engagement ring to be worn as a pair.  She specifically wanted a design like a ring in the shop that had gold balls melted into silver. These rings were hand forged in silver, with 18ct gold balls on them and the diamonds set in 18ct gold bezels.  She never did decide which was the engagement ring and which was the wedding ring !
	An unusual engagement and wedding ring combined.  The client  wanted a contemporary modern heavy weight wedding ring with a twist, and her husband bought the diamond in secret to be incorporated into the ring design - she loved it You can see how we made this unusual wedding ring in our case studies
	An unusual wedding ring in 18ct white gold - designed using conjoined circles and set with 12 diamonds all round - this was made as a special commission
	Shaped Wedding Rings We are often asked to make shaped wedding rings to fit around existing engagement  rings or bespoke engagement rings we are making to commission. This shaped wedding ring was extrapolated from a designed wave shaped engagement ring we were commissioned to make.  The profile and shape of the wedding ring exactly matched the engagement ring.  This is a perfect matching shaped wedding ring which differs from the example below as it exactly follows the shape of the existing ring. The cost of this shaped wedding ring in 18ct yellow gold was around £340
	This shaped wedding ring was designed around an existing engagement ring bought from a high street jewellers. The profile of the ring mached the engagement ring perfectly so it would sit closely on the finger. However the wedding ring was designed to fit around the centre stone setting of the engagement ring. The client wanted a wedding ring which could be worn alone. Two small diamonds completed the effect in 18ct white gold rhodium plated
	Handcrafted Wedding Rings We often make simple handcrafted rings for people, here are some of the more standard ones Flat hammered wedding rings we make by hand as standard ready to wear in silver and 9ct and 18ct yellow, white and red gold.  Bands 2mm, 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm widths in silver, 9ct and18ct gold and platinum.
